Loren "Lefty" Haskett

Loren Warren ?Lefty? Haskett, 87, Carmel, passed away on May 20, 2008 at St. Vincent?s Hospice in Indianapolis from complications of a brain injury suffered in January. He was born in rural Boone County on June 19, 1920, the fourth of seven children born to Raymond and Lenora (Lindley) Haskett. Warren, as he was known then, was a 1938 graduate of Carmel High School. In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II as a Technical Sergeant with the First Infantry Division (Big Rd One) following General Patton across North Africa, Tunisia, Sicily and into England. He went up Easy Red Sector or Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, on D-Day. While home on leave before he shipped out to go overseas in 1942, he married his beloved wife of 61 years, Emma Jane Horton. She preceded him in death in 2003. ?Lefty? as he became known when he returned from the service, worked as a farmer and a mechanic at various auto shops in the Indianapolis and Carmel areas. He was rural Letter Carrier for 26 years retiring in 1984 from the Carmel Post Office. amping, horseshoe pitching, making wood crafts, golf and gardening. He was a member of the Carmel Friends Church, American Legion and the V.F.W. Surviving are on brother, Richard (Laura) Haskett of Noblesville; two sons, Terry Haskett of Danville and Jerry (Susan) Haskett of Carmel; two daughters, Marcia (Paul) DeSmet of Crawfordsville and Debra (Bradley) May of Carmel; nine grandchildren, Jenny Haskett, Mindy (Randy) Holliday, Jamie (Erin) Haskett, Katie (Christopher) Walker, Denise (Greg) Wray, Jon (Nicole) DeSmet, Daniel and Rachel Byam and Jonathan May; ten great grandchildren, Alysa, Kobi, Micah, Emma and Alex Wray; Carlie DeSmet; J.D. Haskett; and Tyler, Tate and Grace Walker. He was also a cherished and devoted uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Four brothers, William ?Bud?, Gene, Raymond Jr., and Don, and one sister, Dorothy Tierney, preceded him in death. Family and friends will gather on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Leppert Mortuary, Smith Carmel Chapel where the funeral service will be held on Friday, May 23rd at 10:00 a.m. with a military graveside service immediately following in Carmel Cemetery.
