Mary Hickam

Mary Hickam, of Indianapolis, left this world to be with her Savior on March 9, 2010. Born in Ellsworth, MN, March 9, 1912, to the late Anna and Thomas Kennedy and educated in Sioux Falls, SD and the University of Minnesota. She worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for three years, before going to the Air Force Aero Medical Lab during World War II, at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. She met and married the late Dr. John B. Hickam in Dayton, OH. Mary and Dr. Hickam spent 12 years in Durham, NC where he was employed at Duke University. In 1958, they moved to Indianapolis where Dr. Hickam became Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Indiana University Medical Center until his death in 1970. Mary joined the staff, as a curator, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, working in the Lilly Pavilion until her retirement in 1995. Survivors include her two children, Helen Wilson and Thomas B. Hickam; five grandchildren, Kim (Richard) Sohnle, John and Laura Bandura and Anna and John Hickam and three great grandchildren, Hayden, Lindsay and Emma Sohnle.
