James Leonard Born, 89, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2014. A native of Evansville, Indiana, he and his wife of 67 years, Anne, have resided in Indianapolis since 1949. Jim was born on January 1, 1925 in Evansville and graduated from Evansville Memorial High School. He was a veteran of World War II, during which his infantry regiment, the 424th, was heavily engaged in the Battle of the Bulge, among other actions. After the war, he graduated from Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose Hulman) in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering. During his professional career, he worked for the U.S. Naval Avionics Facility and RCA Corporation, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church for 45 years and volunteered in various church activities over the years. He was also a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. Jim was known for his sense of humor and for his devotion to his many grandchildren. rilyn Osburn (Terence), Bradley Born (Christine), James Born II, Barbara Pankow (Gregory), Dr. Lawrence Born (Elizabeth), and Carol Wells (Theodore), all of the Indianapolis area, and by twenty-six grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold O. and Marie Gronotte Born, and by four siblings, Betty Ann Born, Rose Marie Bergschneider, William Born, and Lucille Herr. Visitation will be at Leppert Mortuary, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis, from 5-8 PM on October 9th, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis, at 11:30 AM on October 10th. Burial will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery 9001 N. Haverstick Road, Indianapolis. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Miracle Place, 940 Temple Avenue, Indianapolis, or to St. Luke Catholic Church.
