Calvin "Marvin" Voelkel

McAllen- Calvin “Marvin” Voelkel, Jr. passed away March 28, 2016 at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX. He lost his long fought battle with cancer. He is now pain free and at home with his Lord and Savior. Marvin was born in San Marcos, Texas on May 14, 1951 to Calvin Voelkel Sr. and Virginia Voelkel. He grew up in Laredo, Texas where his father was the head football coach for Laredo Martin for many years. He loved sports and played football for Laredo Nixon. They moved to the valley when he was a senior in high school and he stayed with a family friend so he could play football his senior year. Marvin came to Weslaco to join his family his second semester and he graduated from Weslaco High, where his dad was a principal. Some point along the way, he and Laurie would have a chance meeting at a local Channel 5 party. She had moved here from Ohio to teach. They were married on August 19th, 1978. They had two daughters, Jennifer and Catherine. He served his country in the Naval Reserve. He then attended Southwest Texas State University and graduated from Pan American University. ar career in the produce business. He had a strong work ethic and lived and believed in an honest day's work. He loved his family. His children and their health meant the world to him. He was an avid sports fan and lover of music. Marvin had a very witty sense of humor. He liked jokes with a great punch line. He made strong friendships that lasted a lifetime. Honorary Pallbearers include Curtis Wheat, Darryl Lipscomb, Jim Street, Ross Harbison, Peter Harris, Donnie Norrell. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin Voelkel,Sr. and Virginia Voelkel. He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 40 years, Laurie, two daughters Jennifer (Ross) Harbison and Catherine Voelkel, sisters JoLynn Blandford and Toni (Donnie) Norrell, grandchildren Taylor, Trinity, and Ryan Harbison. He is also survived by loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of long-time friends. Visitation will be from 2-8pm on Friday, April 1st. A chapel service will be held on Saturday, April 2nd at 2pm.
