Barbara L. Baxter, 95, of Sheffield, Iowa, passed away, Sunday, July 10, 2016, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. She was born September 20, 1920, in Sheffield, Iowa, to Henri and Mayme (Wunn) Atkinson. Barbara graduated from Sheffield High School in 1937. She was united in marriage on April 27, 1941, to Melvin C. Baxter in Sheffield, Iowa. She worked as an election official in Sheffield for many years up until her eye sight declined, as the hostess at the Sahara Supper Club, Dr. WW Taylor as his receptionist and she was Secretary of the Sheffield Bowling League for many years. Barbara was a member of PEO, Eastern Star, Red Hat Society and the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield where she was also a Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and needle point work. Barbara loved to play 500 and belonged to two different card clubs and also played in the 500 marathon. grandchildren Kelee Sheriff, Parker Sheriff and Berick Baxter and niece Mary (Mike) Lauffer of Chapin. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother John Atkinson, two sister-in-laws Ruth Baxter and Marian Atkinson, and niece Patty Atkinson. In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to First United Methodist church in Sheffield or Hospice of North Iowa, (232 2nd St SE, Mason City, IA 50401).
