Mary Dobson Melvin

Mary Elizabeth (Lib) Melvin, 96, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2013, at Covenant Shores Retirement Home on Mercer Island, WA. She had been a resident there since 1997 when she moved from Kiawah Island, SC. She was born in Newark, NJ, attended high school in Port Washington, NY, attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC and graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. She married her husband, George Melvin, in Newport News, VA in 1942. After World War II they lived in Harbor Island, NC and Panama City, FL before moving to Charlotte, NC. A longtime resident there, she was active in the garden club and the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. After she and George retired to Kiawah Island, she continued to be involved in the community, and in 1990 she was elected a member of the Kiawah Island Town Council. In 1992 she was elected mayor and served for two years. Her passions included knitting, needlepoint, and shell collecting while walking any beach she found herself on. Lib had a very positive impact on many people throughout her life; she lived well and was outgoing to the end. She will be missed. She is survived by her brother David Dobson of Chevy Chase, MD, her daughter Jean Melvin of Everett, WA, and her son-in-law Phillip Lane of Seattle, WA.
