Age 81, died after a brief illness on March 13, 2002. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Wanda Reddin Batley, brother Bill and Bea of Bothell, and sons, Bob and Judy of Gig Harbor, Dick of Lynnwood, Bill and Jane of Redmond, and Jim and April of Ballard. He had nine grandchildren, Cindi and Jim, Josh and Kara, Kyle, Trisha, Shannon and Jason, Kristen, Jessica, Charlotte and Rory, and three great grandchildren, Keaton, Makayla and Cole. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Ermine Courtney, and by his parents, Robert M. and Florence Batley. He was born on March 25, 1920, grew up in Ballard, and lived in Magnolia since 1954. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1937, served as a First Lieutenant in the Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946, graduated from the University of Washington in 1948 and remained a loyal Husky football fan. He was the third generation owner/operator of the Phoenix Shingle Co. in Ballard and later worked for the King County Assessors Office until his retirement. A Memorial Life Celebration will be held at the Yankee Diner in Ballard, 5300 24th NW, on Friday, March 29 from 1 to 4 pm.
