MADISON William Samuel Cudlipp III, of Madison, WI, passed away on November 21, 2016, two days after celebrating his 76th birthday. Bill died after a brief illness at Meriter Hospital in Madison. He was born in Richmond, VA, on November 19, 1940, the son of William Samuel Cudlipp Jr. and Ruth Yeamans Cudlipp. Bill was a brilliant student, earning a BA in Spanish from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1962 and an MA and PhD in Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1963 and 1974, respectively. He was an esteemed Spanish professor first at the University of Richmond and from 1980 until his retirement in 2011 at the UW-Madison. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his only sister, Katherine, of Washington, D.C. Bill had a lifelong passion for classical music and was an accomplished piano player. He was a beloved presence in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for decades, even after retirement. Gentle, sharp, and with a great sense of humor, he touched the lives of many people inside and outside of our classrooms. We will sorely miss his grace, his wit and his warmth.
