Martin John Lauer Born: Springfield, MA July 3, 1943 Married: February 28, 1987 to Nancy Barnes at Our Lady of the Lake in Southwick Ma Died on July 1, 2016, Port Charlotte, FL after a courageous 15-year battle with cancer. Pre-deceased by his Father, William Lauer, who owned and ran Lauer’s Market on Cross Street in Longmeadow, MA. Survived by his wife, Nancy Lauer; Mother, Evelyn Lauer; Brother, William Lauer; Sister, Marjorie Lauer Kamp; and 5 children, Deborah Ponta, Michael Barnes, Kathleen Stevens, Kevin Barnes and Maryellen Barnes Rivera, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Attended Washington School, Forest Park Junior HS, Springfield, Mass., graduated from Longmeadow HS in 1961; and graduated from Nichols College in 1965. Served in the Navy from 1965-1969. Part of that time he was on the Carrier Wasp in the North Atlantic. Reporter for the Springfield Newspapers from 1970 until his retirement in 2002 when he moved to Port Charlotte, FL. never met anyone he didn’t like or want to help. Marty worked tirelessly for Alcoholics Anonymous for over 30 years, sponsoring and mentoring others. From the time he was in elementary school Marty could not stand to see anyone in pain or difficulty. During his life he was drawn to help everyone in need, a true Good Samaritan. He is deeply missed. Visitation Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home 2405 Harbor Blvd. Port charlotte, Florida. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sarasota National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with Military Honors at 9810 State Road 72. Sarasota, Florida 34241.
