Amos Smith, Jr., 96 of North Port, Florida died Monday January 22, 2007 in Port Charlotte, Florida. Mr. Smith was born on September 11, 1910 in Paterson, New Jersey to Amos and Kate Hamilton Smith. He moved to North Port 6 years ago coming from Mahwah, New Jersey. Mr. Smith started the Police and Fire Academy in Bergen County, NJ; he was Fire Chief and Fire Marshal for Bergen County Fire District and retired from the New Jersey Port Authority as a safety inspector. Mr. Smith was an honorary life member of the Mahwah Fire Department Company No. 1; a member of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association; a member of Hawthorne Fortitude Masonic Lodge No. 200 in Ramsey, NJ; a member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of the Shrine Temple in Mahwah, New Jersey. He was a member of Ramapo Reformed Church in Mahwah, NJ, and was the caretaker of the church cemetery. Survivors include his daughter, Alison A. Rustin of North Port, Florida; his sons, Amos A.
