Jerry E. Powell, Jr Jerry E. Powell, Jr, 74, of Punta Gorda, FL died February 3, 2007. He was born June 18, 1932 in Zolfo Springs, FL. He was a proud Christian man and served our country during the Korean War in the US Army. Mr. Powell was a member and yolkfellow at the Eastside Baptist Church, was a member of the Punta Gorda American Legion, the Charlotte County Orchid Society, a past Master of the Masonic Lodge, past president of the S. Tamiami Trail Rangers, past treasurer of the Harry Goulding Hibiscus Society, member of the IOOF and was a member of the Peace River Day Lily Club. He retired in 1992 from the Charlotte County School Board where he had worked as a Custodian at the Punta Gorda Middle School. He was previously employed with D&M Construction and with the Brown Machine Company. Mr. Powell was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He is survived by his sons, Roger Virginia Powell and Mike Debby Powell; brother, Carl Jo Powell; four grandchildren; Erin, Morgan, Vincent and Angela; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, 635 E Marion Ave, Punta Gorda. The Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am, Wednesday at the Eastside Baptist Church, 6220 Golf Course Blvd, Punta Gorda with the Rev Mike Mowry officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Indian Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Eastside Baptist Church or to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Kays-Ponger Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
