Alfred Isaac Boyd, Jr Alfred Isaac Boyd, Jr, 100, of Punta Gorda, FL died February 13, 2010. Capt Boyd was born December 11, 1909 in Midland, TX and was one of three sons of Alfred and Bertha Boyd. Growing up, Alfred spent years working on various family ranches and had many stories of his exploits, most notably from the years spent on his Aunt Minnie's ranch in Pecos, Texas. After graduation from the University of New Mexico, where he played football and was president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Alfred was commissioned into the US Navy as a test pilot. During his thirty year career as a Navy pilot, Alfred served as a test pilot, Commander of several squadrons WWII, Operations Officer aboard the Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier Korean Conflict, graduated from the War College in Newport, RI and served on several combined military staffs at the Pentagon, the Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan and SACLANT in Norfolk, VA. He had many memorable tours of duty. He loved testing aircraft for the Navy and also training Navy pilots. F, he had the opportunity to be the 72 nd pilot to fly the F4 Phantom Aircraft. His last tour of duty was as the Commanding Officer of Lake Mead Base close to Las Vegas, NV. This was a base which was connected with the atomic energy commission and had a top secret mission. On a personal note, Alfred loved professional sports and often during football season had two televisions tuned in to two different games at the same time, collected jokes and loved to have a fine martini. Alfred is survived by his beloved and faithful wife of 65 years, Betty; daughter, Pam, son-in-law David, granddaughters Deedre and Kelli husband Nicholas and nephew Chief Boyd. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, George and Charles. A Graveside Service with military honors will be held at the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL at a later date.
