Gary Heetland, 61, of Lakota, Iowa died Friday, September 5, 2008 in Algona. Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakota with Pastor Dona Steven. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Lakota, with military honors presented by the Lakota American Legion Post 652. Visitation was Monday from 5 to 8:00 PM at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St NW, Buffalo Center, and 1 hour before the service at the church. Gary E. Heetland, son of Ronald and Gretchen (Rippentrop), was born November 4, 1946, at Buffalo Center, Iowa. On April 6, 1947, he was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church. Gary graduated from Lakota High School and then served in the U.S. Army which included a tour of duty in Germany before returning to Lakota to work on the family farm. On August 6, 1972, he married Mary Osberg in Elmore, Minnesota. Together they raised three children, Annette, John, and Heidi. Gary was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church. r and gun collector. Gary also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and taking trips with his children and grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are his special friend Sue; his children: Annette Gunderson and her husband Douglas of Valencia, California. Heidi Olson and her husband Jeff of Blue Earth, Minnesota; grandsons Tyler Heetland, Bailey Olson, and Jacob Gunderson; granddaughter Ashley Olson; his mother Gretchen Heetland of Titonka; one sister Kathy Sunding and her husband John of Kiester; one brother Bruce Heetland and his wife Dawn of Lakota; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by one son John and his father Ronald. Gary was a wonderful son, brother, father, grandfather and friend to many and will be missed by all.
