n and grandchildren's sporting events. When watching college basketball and football games, she would often call her children and brother during halftime in excitement to discuss the scores. ISU, UNI and Iowa teams were all equally loved. Lavonne was also a puzzle master and you would often find her with a puzzle book in her possession, either at home or traveling in a car. This was her version of a cell phone. She was never without her word search, crossword or brain teaser magazines. Lavonne enjoyed traveling with her husband and their vehicle trips to visit family. She also enjoyed coffee time with fellow "lunch ladies," along with gardening and crocheting. Lavonne was also a faithful member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church and was active in New Dimension. Lavonne M. Smith died Friday, June 9, 2017, at the age of 83. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph Smith of Algona; her daughter Lisa Leonard and her husband Randy of Spencer, her daughter Linda Knecht and her husband Eugene of Whittemore, her son Jim Smith and his wife Jackie of Algona, and her son Mike Smith and his wife Kristin of Clarinda; as well as five grandchildren, Kali (Kyle) Morris of Clever, MO, Logan Smith of Algona, and Austin, Owen, and Isabelle Smith all of Clarinda. She is also survived by one great grandchild, Kenna Morris. Also surviving is one brother, Jim Hoffmann of Algona. She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Courtney Leonard who recently passed on January 21, 2017. Lavonne ended all of her conversations with "Bye for Now" and her voice always smiled.
