Holeton was born on July 16, 1922, in North English, IA to John Elvin and Martha Delilah Smith Holeton. He attended school through the 8th grade at Gritter School near North English and finished his education at North English High School. Slim served in the Army during World War II until he was injured by shrapnel and received the Purple Heart. Slim was united in marriage to Shirley M. Kirkpatrick on December 22, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After marriage he joined his father and brothers in the family carpentry business. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and playing cards. He liked a good story or joke, even if it was at his own expense. Slim loved his family and spending time with them. He loved his country and was proud to have served in the Army. ound long after he was gone. He was saddened by the decline in pride and responsibility in the current building market. Slim died on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City from congestive heart disease. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of North English, six children: Kathy Warfield of Sigourney, Janean (Bob) Blake of Marion, John Holeton of South English, David (Laura) Holeton of North English, Susan Holeton of Sigourney and Kirk (Linda) Holeton of South English, 2 brothers, Cecil of Muscatine and Marvin (Kathy) of Oxford; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Byron, Otis and Wayne; two sisters: Leta Aggson and Manie Conaway; and his father-in-law; Leonard "Curly" Kirkpatrick.
