Warren J. Hinkle, 94, of Bettendorf, Iowa died peacefully on Friday July 21, 2017 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Memorial services will be 1:30 pm Tuesday July 25th at Weerts Funeral Home, 3625 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will begin Tuesday at 12:30 pm, at the funeral home. Inurnment is private at Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Warren was born in 1922, in Davenport, the oldest child of Warren A. and Frances Hinkle. He attended public schools in Davenport and then enrolled at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the Navy, went to flight school, and flew many missions off the U.S.S. Yorktown in the Pacific. He returned to Graceland in 1945 after the war and met his future wife Helen D. Skinner. They were married in Chicago on October 19,1946. They moved to the Quad Cities where he completed his B.A. at Augustana College and later his M.A. at the University of Iowa. He was an educator in both Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley School Districts for over 35 years, retiring in 1985. Miramar Beach, Florida. Health and fitness were important to him, and he played golf until he was 90 years old. Warren was an active member and ordained elder of Community of Christ. He served the church in many capacities from lay pastor and stewardship commissioner to youth camp director. He was a member of the Davenport congregation, was a founding member of the Bettendorf congregation, and in the winter served the Fort Walton Beach congregation in Florida. Survivors include his wife Helen, son David (Hector Herrera), Chicago; daughter Nancy (Dr. Nelson Chesney), Bettendorf; two granddaughters, five step grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a sister Jeanne Hinkle Fitzpatrick, Greencastle, IN. His brother John D. Hinkle preceded him in death. Memorials can be made to Community of Christ Davenport or Outreach International.
