ied in 1995. Richard's passion was working on and restoring old cars. He was very talented at doing body work and he looked forward to teaching his craft to the next generation. He also drove a stock car at area dirt tracks for a few years.
His family includes his wife of over 20 years, Mary Rumbaugh of Oskaloosa; four children and their spouses, Kim and Bob Lockard, Kelly and Justin Van Der Veer, and Kerry and Jerrie Sims all of Oskaloosa and Erin and Lori Montgomery of Ottumwa; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three step sons and their families: Al (& Stephanie) Stainbrook, Quinton Ritter and Robert (& Lisa) Nelson; four sisters, Joellen (Chuck) Ehlm of Creston, Irene Fuller of DeWitt, Iowa, Judy Mitchell of Oskaloosa, and Marva (Larry) Terpstra of Oskaloosa; a brother, Jerry (Sonya) Montgomery of New Sharon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sally; a son, Kevin Montgomery; a great grandson, Travis, Jr.; a brother, John Montgomery; and a brother in law, Les Mitchell.
A graveside memorial service and burial will be held Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in the Bloomfield Cemetery east of Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. A procession will form at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bates Funeral Chapel for those wishing to attend the service. As was Richard's wish his body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Friday evening from 5-7 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Richard Montgomery Memorial Fund.
