Born on February 2, 1924 on the family farm near Willey, Iowa, Leo was the son of William Sr., and Anna (Mersman) Schon. He grew up near Willey, and attended St. Mary's School. After his formal education Leo farmed with his father.
On November 27, 1950 Leo was united in marriage to Rosemary Masching at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home south of Glidden where Leo continued to operate his grain and livestock farm. Although Leo enjoyed many things about farming; he enjoyed his yearly trip to the Omaha Stock Yards where he would sell his livestock, something that he had worked hard to raise. In 1986 he retired from farming, and he and Rosie moved to Carroll.
Leo enjoyed gardening, softball, baseball, Euchre, and polka music, especially Mollie B. Later in his life, Leo discovered his singing voice. "You Are My Sunshine" became his theme song to share joy with many. Most of all Leo enjoyed his family, and each and every grandchild, great-grandchild, and great-great-grandchild, and their accomplishments. Leo was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll, and through frequent visits to Holy Spirit School he became known as Kuemper's Grandpa Leo.
