Wanda "Louise" (Weezee) Kennis, age 85, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Louise was born on January 15, 1932, in Mystic, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Ruth (Babbitt) Kennis. She graduated from Mystic High School in 1949.
Following high school graduation, Louise accepted a position with ISU (Iowa Southern Utilities). She began her employment as a billing clerk with ISU at the Rexall Drug Store in Mystic, Iowa. Louise eventually relocated to the ISU Building located on the Northeast corner of the Centerville Square. Throughout the years, her job responsibilities with ISU included numerous customer service positions. Louise retired from Iowa Southern Utilities in the early 1990s, following a career that spanned forty four years with the company.
Louise believed in the betterment of the Centerville community. Her civic responsibilities led her to becoming a Centerville City Council Member, a position she maintained for over sixteen years. In her free time, Louise enjoyed bowling. Moreover, she was an active league member at Adams Bowl in Centerville for forty years. Louise enjoyed competing at team bowling tournaments throughout the Midwest. She was also a past member of BPW-Business and Professional Women.
Louise was baptized at the age of sixty five at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville and maintained her membership with the church for the past twenty years.
Everyone will remember Weezee for her "infamous" joke telling.
She is survived by two nieces, Sue Valentine of Adel, Iowa, and Christy (Chuck) Trullinger of Urbandale, Iowa; a nephew, David Large of Newton, Iowa; many adopted daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and grandsons; as well as her beloved dog, Freddie.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Avis Kennis; and a brother-in-law, Charlie "Junior" Large.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Reverend Jeremy McElvain officiating. Burial will follow in the Promise City Cemetery, Promise City, Iowa. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 9:00-10:30AM.
