with a few remaining Japanese military, roamed the streets together soaking in the culture. Back in Indiana in 1946, he met the love of his life, Betty Jackson, on a blind date. They married in 1948. Together they had four daughters, who Cal boasted about with more frequency every year of his life. His family was his greatest treasure, and he was not afraid to demonstrate his love for them at every opportunity. Favorite memories were trips to Florida, Christmases around the silver tinsel tree, skiing at Lake Wawasee, and basement slot car tournaments. Cal had an enormous heart, a great sense of humor, and lived life to the fullest until his final day on Earth. He was a volunteer at St. Vincent Hospital for over 25 years where he brought smiles to the patients he transported in his golf cart. Delayed but undeterred by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, he cruised the Panama Canal solo at the age of 90. He enjoyed weekly scrabble games with his daughters and usually beat them. Three weeks before his death, he celebrated his 95th birthday at a daughter's home where a sixteen-piece band played all his favorite jazz tunes. Cal sang and danced while he savored memories and relationships formed over the last century. Cal is survived by his four cherished daughters, Judy (Ken Sobbe) Tyrrell, Terry (Tim) Feezle, Barbara (Charles) Grahn, and Sally (Dan) Neff; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Cal was preceded in death by his loving wife Betty (Jackson); brothers Jack, Bill, and Jerry; sister Marjorie; and parents Lillian (Mansfield) and Calvin Case Mathews Sr. We would like to thank The Forum at the Crossing directors Kristina Johnson and Becky Elliott as well as their caring team for their love and support.
