Barbara Douglass, 91, of Davenport, passed away on Sat., September 9th, 2017 at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at Koning Chapel, Ridgecrest Village, at 1:30 pm Thurs. Sept. 21st where her family will greet friends from 12:30 until time of service. Visitation will also be held the evening before, from 5-7:00 pm Wed. at Weerts Funeral Home, Jersey Ridge and Kimberly Road, Davenport. Burial will be held at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, at 11:30 am Mon. Sept.25th. Those wishing to attend the committal are asked to meet at 10:30 am Mon. at Weerts Funeral Home for procession onto the Island. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army. Barbara E. Douglass was born in Illinois to George and Ellene Lehne. When she was a young girl, the family moved to Davenport, where she attended St. Katherine's School. After graduating from high school in Davenport, she attended the University of Iowa, where she was a music major with additional studies in vocal music with Dr. Henry Veld at Augustana College. Navy Air Corps. In addition to her vocal talents, she worked for WQAD-TV in the Quad Cities, did commercial spots, and hosted public service shows for the station. She was the one of the first female TV weather reporters in the U.S. at WQAD-TV. Barbara performed in five leading roles in Quad Cities Music Guild productions and served on their Board of Directors. Barbara worked in public relations for 1st National Bank of Moline. She was the first organizing director of the Volunteer Bureaus of Scott County, Iowa, served as Executive Director of the Voluntary Action Center (now the Volunteer Center of the Greater Quad Cities), and developed the program for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for the Quad City area. She served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Volunteer Bureaus, and was a member of Governor George Romney's Task Force on Reorganization of NCVA (now the Points of Light Foundation in Washington, D.C.) in 1973. Barbara was instrumental in developing the Volunteer Service League of Ridgecrest Village and served as its first president. In 1990, she was the recipient of the Iowa Association of Homes for the Aging Public Service Award. After retirement from her volunteer activities, Barbara and her husband, Tom, owned an archival business for safe photo and paper preservation, and she was a Creative Memories consultant, providing education for individuals and groups on preserving their photos and memories in archival albums and materials. She gave classes in her home, and taught a class at Scott Community College on archival preservation. She was a member of P.E.O. chapter IB of Davenport for nearly 70 years. She was a long-time member of St. John's United Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church, both in Davenport, and sang in both choirs for many years. Barbara was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for many years. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Thomas Scott Douglass, Jr., a retired automobile dealer at the family business, Warren L. Langwith Pontiac/Cadillac, Inc., Davenport. She is survived by their son, Dr. Thomas S. Douglass III (and wife Sandy) of Gilbert, MN, grandson, T.S. Douglass IV (and Jamie Sambdman) of Davenport, two great-grandsons, Thomas S. V, Iowa City and Jonathon Douglass, Davenport, two step-granddaughters, Tammy Hynes, Houston, TX, and Julie (Abel) Salas, and three step-great-grandchildren, Sophia, Chloe, and A.J. Salas, all of Sugar Land, TX, many extended family members, and many beloved friends, including Linda Janus of Springfield, IL, and Nancy Feldmann of Davenport.
