Bertie Quam, 84, of Burlington, died at 10:20 AM Thursday, September 14, 2017, at her home in Burlington.
Born June 3,1933, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Elbert and Ruth Breuer Snell. On February 21, 1954, she married Jerry D. Quam in Burlington. He later passed on April 25, 2007.
She was a lifelong nurse and care giver, and held an active nursing license until a year ago. She worked as a surgery nurse for Fort Madison Community Hospital for 17 years. She also worked as a nurse doing in-home health care for Professional Case Management.
She graduated from Winfield High School in 1947. She graduated in 1953 from the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing.
She helped start hospice services in the area and volunteered many hours at Great River Hospice, as well as, serving as Director of Volunteers. In 2004, she received a Volunteer of the Year in Iowa Award for her work. She was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. Survivors include three sons, Spencer S (Magali) Quam of Lafayette, CA; Steven D Quam of Burlington; and Samuel D (Anna) Quam of Gladstone, IL; six grandchildren, Shane, Savanna (Derek Evans), Courtney, Zara, Joseph, and Margaux; one great-grandchild, Hayzel Evans; one sister, Mary Gilbert of Mission, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters, Norene Maycroft and Kay Joslyn.
Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM , at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Bertie will be 11:00 AM Monday, September 18, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Hermansen officiating. A time of refreshments and fellowship will be held at Big Muddy's following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House, her grandchildren, and Bethany Lutheran Church.
