Henderson Locker and Uniroyal in Red Oak as an inspector. In 1981, she started working at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. She retired in 1992, but eventually went back to work at the hospital where she had the opportunity to work with her daughter, Susie, for a year. Alice and Don enjoyed traveling and spent several winters in their motor home in Texas. Alice took many trips nationally and internationally with Don and the girls. She was a past member of the Henderson Library Club, Order of Eastern Star, Jolly Dozen Club, Friday Federated Club, Helping Hand Circle, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Macedonia Historical and Preservation Society. She also served on the Macedonia City Council for 8 years. In 1998, Alice received a volunteer award from Governor Terry Branstad. She inherited her love of quilt making from her mother and made each daughter, grandchild, and great grandchild a quilt. She also enjoyed sewing, being outdoors, and tending to her garden, berry patch, and flowers, and over the years enjoyed helping Don teach square dance lessons.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Donald in 2007; sisters: Phyllis Sonderup and Roberta Morris; brother: James Pendegraft; and great granddaughter: Ariana Montgomery. Survivors include her daughters: Sandy Sladky and husband Richard of Omaha, NE; Sherry Cook and husband Tom of Grand Island, NE; and Susie Achenbach of Macedonia, IA; 8 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; sister: Mavis McDuffie of Omaha, NE; brother: Don Pendegraft and wife Linda of Creston, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held 2 PM Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Macedonia United Methodist Church in Macedonia, Iowa. The family will have a private burial at a later time at the Macedonia Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
