John Harvey "Jack" McDonnell was born July 10, 1942, at Whittemore, Iowa, son of Thomas H. and Mary Josephine "Mae" (Higley) McDonnell.
Jack attended Presentation Academy and graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School in 1960. From Northwest Missouri State he received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in English and Journalism along with teacher certification. Jack served in the US Army for four years, most of it in Korea. He retired last year after 25 years of service as a rural mail carrier for the US Post Office.
Jack had an exceptional wit with humor and a genuine softhearted love for animals. He spent much of his free time traveling and watching sports, especially baseball and the Yankees. Jack enjoyed reading, writing, and taking trips to Minnesota and Texas with his friends.
Jack was a member of the Seely-Walsh American Legion Post # 425, the Whittemore Library Board, Smithsonian Institute, the National Writer's Organization, and the American Humane Society.
John Harvey McDonnell died Sunday, November 16, 2003, at his residence in Whittemore at the age of 61.
