Alfred Joseph Berte was born December 24, 1934, at Irvington, son of Nick and Josephine (Dentzer) Berte. He grew up in St. Joe and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1953. Following school, he served in the United States Navy. Alfred married Judith Crandall on November 12, 1966, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Alfred loved farming and farmed his entire life near St. Joe. He and his wife moved into Algona in 1994. Alfred J. Berte died Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City from heart failure. He was 69. He is survived by his wife Judy, Algona; seven children, Laurie Reding and her husband Mike, LuVerne, Adam Berte, Algona, Alana Banek and her husband Vincent, New York, NY, Roger Berte, Altoona, Rita Hilbert and her husband Barney, Ankeny, Maria Berte, Minneapolis, MN and Rebecca Berte, Charleston, SC; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Adam Berte and August Berte; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Berte; a brother-in-law, Louis Laubenthal; and three nephews, Larry Berte, Richard Laubenthal, and Eddie Berte.
