Elmer Henry Madetzke was born on May 5, 1923, in Hebron Township, near Stevens, Iowa, to Henry and Martha Maass Madetzke. He received his education in the country school near Stevens. After his schooling, Elmer started farming. On November 22, 1944, Elmer was married to Maxine Kessal near Elmore, Minnesota. The couple continued farming near Stevens until 1963. They moved near Lakota, Iowa and farmed there until 1988, when Elmer retired. Elmer and Maxine moved into Titonka, Iowa in 1989, where Maxine operated the café for a few years.
Elmer had belonged to the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Stevens, where he had been baptized and confirmed. When they moved to the Lakota area, Elmer and Maxine became members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota. Elmer enjoyed fishing, playing horseshoes and hard work.
Elmer died suddenly on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa. He was 80.
