Joe Thomas Forgy, age 76, passed away on March 31 at Summit Hospital in Nashville, TN after a fall and broken hip which ultimately led to pneumonia. Born in Cowan, TN January 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Avaline (Cowan) and Homer Forgy. Joe was named for his two grandfathers. He was preceded in death by his older brother Ellis (Ty) Cowan Forgy and is survived by his sister, Deta Jean Forgy (Hopkins). He is also survived by five nieces and one nephew. Joe was the last surviving Forgy in Franklin County. He attended Cowan Public School and was in the first graduating class of Franklin County High School. Joe attended the University of the South his first semester and then transferred to Tennessee Tech in Cookville TN. Joe was quite a baseball player and was awarded one of the first baseball scholarships pitching at Tennessee Tech. On May 1, 1954 he was involved in a terrible car accident on Monteagle Mountain while hitchhiking home to Cowan after a ball game. Joe suffered multiple life threatening injuries, including brain trauma, and was in a coma for almost four months. cently moving to the Nashville area to be close to his only surviving sibling. He read and studied the bible and was very strong in his faith to God and devoted to the church. He especially loved singing hymns. Joe was also very strong physically and many folks enjoyed getting their shoulders or feet massaged by his strong hands. For many years he enjoyed bowling and being on a league. Joe donated 168 pints of blood to the American Red Cross over the years, never missing a chance to help others. Visitation will be at Cowan Church of Christ on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. The service, led by Brother Dan Jones, will be at 12 noon at the church and internment will follow at Cowan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Church of Christ in Cowan.
