Donald L. "Zeke" Winkel

Donald Lawrence "Zeke" Winkel was born November 16, 1923 in Iowa City son of Laurence A. and Ida M. (Peterson) Winkel. He grew up in Algona graduating from St. Cecelia Catholic High School in 1941. Zeke attended Loras College in Dubuque a year prior to serving his county in the United States Navy during WWII and then returned to Loras for one more year following his duty. Don was united in marriage to June Forsberg on July 29, 1948 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona. For a short time, Don worked with his brother, Robby in the tile and drainage business. He then worked as a carpenter and as a maintenance janitor at Garrigan High School. He also sold Moorman's Feed and later drove school bus for 25 years until retiring in 2004. Zeke helped his family maintain Calvary Cemetery since high school and assumed the directorship in 1980 from his father. He was still involved until the time of his death. Don enjoyed playing in the Knights of Columbus Baseball league for 10 years. He was an avid sports fan enjoying bowling, fishing, and also collecting antiques. He is survived by his children: Karen Crotty and her husband Michael of Parker, Colorado; Sharon Dailey of Ballwin, Missouri; Carol Ann Hansen of Platte, Missouri; David Winkel and his wife Susan of Westminster, Colorado; Thomas Winkel and his wife Rose of Denver, Colorado; eight grandchildren and three and ½ great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers and sisters, Gordon Winkel and his wife Delores of Algona, Arthur Winkel and his wife Marge of Centerville, Eldon Winkel and his wife Julie of Algona, Helen Gargiulo of Garden Grove, CA and LaVonne Henry of Whittemore; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Robert; his wife June on June 17, 2004; a son-in-law, Randy Hansen; and two brothers-in-law, Jerry Gargiulo and Jack Henry.
