Alfred Otto Hahn was born on January 10, 1920, at Breslau, Germany to Helman and Gertrude Hahn. He received his education at Breslau. Soon after, Alfred became a Master Electrician. Alfred served in the German Army during World War II. He was stationed near the Russian Front and eventually became a POW of the Russian Army. Alfred was married to Kaethe Walewski at Locken, Germany on November 25, 1944. In 1955, Alfred and Kaethe came to the United States through a program associated with the Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. Their sponsors were Gene and Mary Faulstich. Alfred was an electrician and worked for various local contractors. He became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #288. He received his Master Electrician Certification in the U.S. in 1965. Alfred retired in 1985. Alfred and Kaethe were members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. He enjoyed woodworking, electronics and working on HO Scale Model Railroad Trains. Alfred died on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was 86. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Claus Dieter Hahn.
