Bernice Josephine Mayer was born March 14, 1922, at Whittemore, Iowa, to John and Theresa (Fuhrman) Thill. Bernice graduated from LuVerne High School in 1942, and married Robert (Bob) Mayer at St. Benedict Catholic Church on November 16, 1954. Following high school graduation, Bernice worked at the telephone office. She later moved to Dayton, Ohio, with her friend, Mickey, Mrs. Ray Walker where they worked as secretaries at the Air Force Base. Bernice later moved back to Iowa where she attended LaJames School of Beauty in Ft. Dodge. She then worked for Fowlers Beauty Shop. After her children were grown, Bernice worked at Pamida, and later Bomgaars in the fabric department. She later worked for the Algona Public Library. Bernice belonged to the St. Cecelia's Adoration Chapel for 20 years and also attended services there. She was a member of the C.D.A. of St. Benedict parish and co-chaired their Round Robin Card Club. She belonged to many card clubs, whether it be Bridge or 500 and enjoyed the many friends she made. She loved her flowers and gardening. Bernice was the mother of six children - Barb Mayer and her friend Mike Helland of Burnsville, MN, Bill Mayer and wife Deanna of Algona and their four children, Nancy Mayer Conley and husband Steven of Alexandria, MN, and their four children, John Mayer and wife Kate of Algona and their three children, Jim Mayer and wife Kim of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and their two children and Julie Mayer of Cocoa, Florida, and her friend Robby Cox. She dearly loved her 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Bernice is also survived by brothers Roman Thill and wife Marie of Fairmont, MN, and Harold Thill of St. Benedict, Iowa. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Marcella Garman, Zita Hoberer, Caroline Eischen, Elvera Kajewski and brother Orville Thill.
