in Waterloo, Iowa. Martie graduated from West High School in Waterloo in 1946. She continued her education at teacher's college in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The end of WWII brought many young back to Iowa and at a college dance, Martie met the man she told all she was goin to marry, Donald D. Eck of Jesup, Iowa; and marry they did on August 24, 1947! To this union four children were born; David W. Eck (Paula) of Cedar Falls, Deborah L. Adam of Slinger, Wisconsin, Nancy Jo Anne Cameron (Bill) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Andrew D. Eck (Kathy) of Dakota City. Martie was continued to be blessed by eleven grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, one great great grandson and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Plus a very special pen pal of 74 years, Margaret Davidson of Perth, Scotland. Martie had a unique way of maintaining special long-term friendships with so many wonderful people from all over the United States and from around the world.
Martie and Don traveled all over the world to visit their daughter and son-in-law Bill, who were stationed in the Air Force, in Greece and Iceland. They also enjoyed Scotland, Wales, England, Italy, France, Germany, Austria and Hawaii before Don passed in 1993. Martie continued her travels and China was one of her highlights. Whether it was by bus, boat or plane. She cruised to Alaska (twice), Panama Canal, Mexican Rivera and Eastern Caribbean to name a few.
One of Martie's proudest accomplishments was campaigning to get a hospital built in Humboldt! She was also a strong advocate for Job Corp of Iowa and then acting Gov. Ray called her to ask for her guidance and opinion.
Martie was a member and past president of Republican Women in Iowa. Belonged to Women's Club in Moville,IA. She was also a Boy Scout Den Mother and a Girls Scout leader when her children were young and living in Shell Rock, Iowa from 1960-1966. Also helping at the time to organize the Shell Rock Swing Show that is still going strong today.
Her faith was strong and she was active in the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt as well as Velda Rose Methodist Church in Mesa, Arizona.
Martie is preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents; brother Milo F. Ralston;sister -in law Rosemary Ralston, sister, Dorothy Mae Ralston; brother-in-laws, Keith, Ken & Wendell Eck; sister-in-laws, Eleanor Borrett and Bobbie Cochran and special friend to the family, "Uncle Joe" Shirk.
Memorials may be made in Martie's name to Unity Point Hospice of Fort Dodge, Iowa or donations can be handled by the family.
