iest of the Royal Arch Masons of the State of Iowa in 1997-1998, the Grand Marshall of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masons of Iowa, and Master of the local Blue Lodge in Centerville. Some of the Masonic organizations that he was active in include: Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar, Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, the Iowa York Rite, Blue Lodge, and Eastern Star, among others. Clinton was a member of the Centerville Presbyterian Church and helped with the Centerville Hospital Auxiliary crafting group.
Clinton had a passion for teaching and working with students in Industrial Arts. He took great joy in hearing from them and about their life stories as they moved into adulthood.
Upon retirement, Clint and Marge enjoyed traveling which took them to Washington D.C. to see the new World War II Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. Additionally, they enjoyed cruises to Hawaii and Alaska. He also made new crosses for Mercy Medical Center in Centerville and then the main hospital in downtown Des Moines; including two large crosses outside the east entrance and outside the chapel, of the latter. A total of more than 400 of his crosses hang throughout several of the Mercy hospitals.
After living in Centerville for 60+ years, in 2014, Clinton and Margery moved to Indianola, Iowa, to be closer to their son, Gordon, and his wife Denise and their children, Kristine and Brad.
Clinton is survived by Margery, his wife of 67 years, his son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Denise of Indianola, Iowa, and his grandchildren, Kristine of Cedar Falls, and Brad of Syracuse, New York, nieces and nephews, other family, friends and former students. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Winnifred, his sister and brother-in-law, Leone and William Elliott.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church of Centerville. Interment will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Red Oak Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church of Centerville or the Clinton Smith Scholarship Fund and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.
