Lorenzo “Larry” Alar, 86 of Greenwood, Indiana passed away on August 6, 2017.
Larry was born in Borongan, Samar, Philippines on February 2, 1931. He worked as an elite Presidential Guard for Ramon Magsaysay and Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez, and later for the Government Service Insurance System in the Philippines. He came to the United States in 1969. He worked as an insurance agent for American General Life and as a Real Estate broker for General Development. He opened the first Asian grocery store in Indianapolis, and owned a Filipino restaurant and a 24-hour diner.
He was a long time member of the American-Filipino Barangay Club. In his free time he enjoyed singing, fishing, cooking, travelling, and spending time with friends and family. He is survived by his wife Leonor of 28 years, children: Brigitte Cantrell, Josefina Alar, Alberto Alar, Maria Dohanich (Mark), Lorda Alar (Todd Cowan), Josephine Anareta (Jovy), Veronica Caparas, Perfecto Caparas (Heidi Lopez), Vida Caparas, Catherine Cherukuri (Shaker), Maria McDuff (Tim), and many grandchildren.
