Interment: East Lawn Cemetery ~ Algona, Iowa John McNeill was born January 29, 1910, at Butterfield, Minnesota, the son of Katherine (Wheelock) and Edward McNeill. The family moved to Kossuth County when John was two years old. John's mother died when he was 12 years old and he was the second oldest living child of 11 children. John was married to Evelyn Cruikshank on November 28, 1936, in her family farm home by the Good Hope Methodist pastor. After their marriage they farmed the home farm for the next 66 years until they moved to Van Buren Terrace, in Algona in December 2001. He lived there until shortly before his death. John was a hard working farmer who retired at the amazing age of 92! He had a knack for trouble shooting broken farm machinery and could fix almost anything. His mechanical inclination led him to build a number of machines to make his farm work more efficient. John enjoyed caring for the land and livestock and especially enjoyed a calf operation prior to retirement. Neighbors remember John as always taking time to help when they were in need. e spent with them. John was an active member of Good Hope United Methodist Church for 67 years. His keen mind, until death, always made visits with John enjoyable. John died Friday, September 17, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society ~ Algona. He was 100. John is survived by his sons, Joel (Marina) and Michael (Polly) of Algona; granddaughters, Catherine (Brian) Upper of St. Charles, Illinios; Molly (Rob) Vincent of Polk City; Elizabeth (Andrew) Bolstad of Arlington, Massachusetts and great grandchildren, Allison and Andrew Vincent and Will and Ellen Upper, as well as many loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 66 years, Evelyn four brothers and six sisters.
