The Rev. Dr. Garth R. Thompson, 83, of Lauderhill passed away Oct. 24, 2017, at his home.
Garth served churches in Puerto Rico for 13 years before moving to South Florida in 1972. He was the Pastor of Miami Beach Community Church for 39 years. Garth then served the United Church of Christ in Ft. Lauderdale where he was known as "the good for nothing Pastor." For 2 ½ years, Garth donated his time free of charge. He is credited with helping the church remain open and to grow.
Always active in his community, Garth founded the Samaritan Center for Christian Counseling and was a member and past president of both the Miami Beach and Hollywood Rotary Clubs. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary International Foundation.
Garth is survived by his spouse of 27 years, Paul Brassington.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017, at the United Church of Christ of Ft. Lauderdale, 2501 NE 30th St.
