Eugene "Gene" J. Hefel, 77, of Balltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 28, 2017, at his home.
To honor and celebrate Gene's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2017, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 468 Balltown Road with Rev. Noah J. Diehm officiating. Family and friends may visit from 2:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2017, and 9:00-10:00 a.m. Thursday, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd. Burial will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Balltown.
Gene was born January 5, 1940 near North Buena Vista, Iowa, the son of John and Marie (Ludovissy) Hefel. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Errthum on June 25, 1960 at Holy Cross Church in Holy Cross, Iowa. Gene was a 50 year member of the International Union of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. He enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren, searching for pieces of pink depression glass, trout fishing, taking pride in his lawn, and of course, enjoying his chocolate ice cream.

) Hefel of Lodi, WI, Marty (Lee) Hefel of Oelwein, Marsha (Randy) Kerper of Ankeny, Deanna (Steve) Maifield of Ames, Donna (Ron) Gruening of Cedar Falls, and Trisha (Ryan) Roach of Dubuque; grandchildren, Lindsey and Kaitlin Hefel, Tyler and Emma Hefel, Kyle and Allie Kerper, Claire and Caroline Maifield, Ethan, Lily, Elaina and Lucas Gruening, Elijah and Lauren Roach; and sister in-laws, Adeline Hefel of Dubuque and JoAnn (Hefel) Kremer of Farley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers, Anthony, Phillip, Louis, Marcellus, Vince, Lawrence and Bernard; a sister, Hilda (Wagner) Engelken and grandson Matthew Hefel.
The family wishes to thank the many people, too numerous to mention, who have supported us and will be in our hearts forever.
