ty in Des Moines and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Brian furthered his education by attending the University of Illinois in Chicago while working at the Board of Trade and Mercantile Exchange for a short time. He completed his MBA degree at Arizona State University.
In 1984, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona and where he quickly became a real-estate investor. Brian considered himself a "sun bird" escaping to Mason City to avoid the Arizona summer heat. Over the past 15 years, he added properties in Mason City to his real estate portfolio.
He was united in marriage to his long-time partner, Susan Mertes, on April 2, 2017, in Gold Canyon, Arizona.
Brian enjoyed creating custom photo cards, snow skiing, was an avid photographer, and loved all kinds of music, but especially Rock & Roll. He also loved traveling extensively throughout Europe making new friends along the way.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan Mertes of Mason City and Gold Canyon, Arizona; his mother, Bonita Kalaway of Dundee, Illinois; his father, Alvin G. Pofahl of Flat Rock, North Carolina; his sisters, Andrea (James) Campbell of Grayslake, Illinois, Kelley (Doug) Winger of Crystal Lake, Illinois, and Carolyn (Joe) Poweziak of Algonquin, Illinois; nieces and nephews, Brandon Winger, Ashlee Winger, Aaron (Becky) Clinard, Adam Clinard, Harmony Poweziak, and Josiah Poweziak; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other extended family members and friends.
