lings ... three brothers and three sisters. My oldest sister is now 104. My grandfather, who was kind of a live-in baby sitter told my oldest sister that since I was born on Groundhog Day, I would eventually turn into one if I wasn't a good girl. That sister said she's kept watching for that to happen. Following high school graduation at Arcadia, Ohio in 1939, I did housework for several months earning $4.00 per week. I bought my first car, a 1939 Plymouth Coupe, while working at the Boss Glove Factory in Findlay. I quit that job and sold the car in order to attend Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute (now a college). In 1950, I earned a B.A. in Education at Marion College, Indiana, (now Indiana Wesleyan University). Several years later, I attended Seattle Pacific College for the 5th year teaching requirement for a Washington State teaching certificate. I worked with Peniel Missions (no longer exists) from 1950 to 1965... first in San Francisco and then in Seattle. Our unofficial motto was, "Soap, Soup & Salvation". Peniel was associated with World Gospel Missions. I fell in love and married Talmadge J. Self on November 26th 1966. He passed away on September 4th, 1968. His death was a very difficult time for me. I wore his ring to the end of my days. My body is to be buried beside his at Evergreen Washelli on Monday, November 20th. Seattle Public Schools hired me in October of 1965 to teach in their Home Instruction Program. That program was discontinued 15 years later and I was transferred for another year to the teen-age floor at Seattle Children's Hospital. After that year that program was discontinued. I taught at Whitman Middle School for the next three years, retired and then returned as a tutor at Whitman from 1985-1990. In 1990 I was hired as church secretary at the Ballard Free Methodist Church where I was a member. I worked as secretary for 7 years. Later, I volunteered at Columbia Lutheran Home for nearly 14 years. Along the way I enjoyed music ... especially the music and the old hymns of the church. I sang in the church choir, loved the congregational singing (especially enjoyed people singing in parts), collected the recordings of gospel musicians and playing my accordion for my own enjoyment/edification. They say I was a good cook...I tried ! I liked fixing meals and entertaining. My specialties were pork chops, baked ham, friend chicken and Salisbury steak. I was old fashioned in this regard and believed in having mashed potatoes with gravy, dinner rolls and a relish dish. It was important that each one at the table got plenty to eat (farmer daughter background) . I liked preparing desserts to top off the meal .... Pies, cakes and very often there were frozen dessert creations ... often involving strawberries. Faith in the Lord was the most important thing of all. I tried to be consistent in having daily devotions ... reading my Bible and spending time in prayer. I prayed for the many people I knew and loved, especially if they were going through hard times. I wanted my life to be an example of someone who followed the Lord. I tried to be conscientious in my walk ... sometimes I worried about such and wondered if I was being "good enough" for Him. Even so, God was good to me and I cherished His promises of hope, peace and comfort. I tried when the timing was right to tell others of His love. "Thank you" to all for being part of my life. I enjoyed our time(s) and our relationships. You have been good to me and I appreciate all that you have ever done for me. So I guess there will be a Life Celebration gathering at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home (11111 Aurora Ave. N. - Seattle, WA) on Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 starting at 1:00 PM. It sure would be good to see you all there, remembering our times together in the past, enjoying some good conversation with each other, looking at a few snapshots of my life (Oh My !). The funeral home will be webcasting the event in real time for friends and family who live afar and are unable to physically attend. They will be publishing an internet link so you can watch & listen. The webcast can also be viewed after the fact if you need to (All this modern stuff !!). And then there will be a time for refreshments and fellowship after the chapel time. They have a very nice reception room. Okay .... That's quite enough of me I am sure. I love you and leave these words of an old hymn with you: "Some golden daybreak, Jesus will come. Some golden daybreak, battles all won. He'll shout the victory, break through the blue Some golden daybreak, for ME, for YOU"
