ring WWII. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science at what it is now CSU and his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota.
Bert married Betty McDonald on January 1, 1949 in Lead. They moved to Colorado in 1959, where they raised their family. Bert and Betty were married for nearly 50 years. Betty passed away in December 1997.
Bert was a Professor of Zoology at UNC for over 25 years. He had a profound impact on several of his students and kept in touch with many of them throughout the years.
Bert enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, camping in the mountains and photography. He also loved his Golden Labrador dogs.
Bert is survived by his daughter, Barbara Butler (Dwight) of College Station; four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren and his special friend, Betty Williams.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Bert O. Thomas, Jr. and a brother, Jack Thomas.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Gwen Nienhueser for the wonderful care she provided to Bert and also for the hospitality and kindness of Betty Williams and her family.
Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 followed by funeral service at 2:00 p.m. both at Stoddard Funeral Home. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
