Surrounded by his family, Leonard Sigmund Fedor died peacefully at his home in Louisville, Colorado on November 17, 2017 at the age of 82. He was born in Chicago on November 6, 1935. After graduating high school in Downers Grove, Illinois, he served in the Marine Corps (1955-1957), received his Bachelor's degree from San Diego State University, and earned his master's degree in meteorology at MIT in 1964. Leonard married JoAnne Spano on April 26,1964 in Boston. After living in Boston, Chicago and San Diego, he and JoAnne found home and settled in Boulder, Colorado in 1965, where he began his career as an oceanic and atmospheric physicist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He spent over 40 years at NOAA conducting research in the areas of remote sensing, tropical cyclones, sea ice and ocean waves. He was heavily involved in the design, construction, and field campaigns with aircraft-based remote sensors.
Len had a deep love of the mountains, and had a passion for spending time at his cabin with friends and family, renovating, planting trees, hiking, and enjoying nearby fields of columbine. Leonard was ski instructor, and hockey and soccer...[more]
ach to his kids, and passed along his passion for the outdoors to his family, who continue to enjoy skiing, hiking, climbing, and coaching the next generation. Favorite family memories also include coast-to-coast road trips and camping throughout the southwest. He was "Papa" and the number one fan of all of his grandkids; he rarely missed a basketball or lacrosse game, gymnastics meet, music or dance performance, art show or play.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Len is survived by JoAnne, his wife of 53 years; son Adam (Anne) of Boulder, Colorado; son Erik (Heidi) of Lafayette, Colorado; daughter Lara Ziady (Raja) of Louisville, Colorado; six grandchildren, Bridger, Sammer, Riley, Tia, Anika and Toren; sister Diane Meiser (Jerry); brother Jim Vroman (Susan); sister Sue Barnhill (Carl); numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
