Dr. Harold G. Schwarz, 87, former Keokuk Podiatrist, died at his home at 4:30 AM Saturday, May 3, 2003. He was born on August 15, 1915 in Keokuk to Albert and Alice Thorp Schwarz. He married Bette on May 27, 1960 at the Baptist Church in Carthage, Illinois. She survives. Additional survivors are two sons, David E. Schwarz and his wife, Marlene, of Keokuk and Craig A. Schwarz and his wife, Debra, of Howell, Michigan; granddaughter, Kimberly Schwarz of San Diego, California and grandsons, Jeffrey Schwarz of Ames, Iowa, Craig A. Schwarz Jr. & Todd Schwarz of Howell, Michigan; sister-in-law, Marian Schwarz of Keokuk; faithful niece & nephew, Roberta & Lyndle Bitting and other niece and nephews, Roger & Katie Davis and Phil Davis. Dr. Schwarz was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters. He graduated from Keokuk High School and from the Illinois College of Podiatry and Foot Surgery in 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He opened his office in the Grand Hotel building and later the Dorsey Medical Building. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Kappa Fraternity and was a 50-year member of the Apollo Council, Damascus Commandry, Keokuk Lodge #29, Gate City Chapter 7 and Secretary-Treasurer of High Twelve. Dr. Schwarz served as District Chairman of the Southeastern Iowa Council of Boy Scouts of America, president of the Hawthorne School PTA, president of the First Lutheran Church Council and membership chairman of the YMCA. He was involved in numerous civic activities and was an avid handball and racquetball player. He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family. Funeral services were held May 8, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church of Keokuk or to the Hoerner Y.
