He was a longtime member of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, serving as both a deacon and as an elder Duane's passion for the outdoors and all that it contained carried over into a love of hunting and fishing with friends and family. He also loved to travel, and combined it with teaching, travelling to Australia nine times with groups of teachers who were able to make connections with teachers down under while earning continuing education credits. He and Erna also traveled extensively, visiting Africa, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Ecuador, Iceland, and Europe, among others. He did not neglect travel on the North American continent, traveling often to Canada for fishing trips, and to the National Parks all across the United States. Funeral services in Des Moines will be held at 10:00 AM on November 24, 2017 at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines Iowa, 50322. The family will be receiving friends at 9:00 AM prior to the service. A second service will be held in Holland, Iowa at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, 18935 K Avenue, Holland, Iowa, 50642 at 2:30 PM.
