Samantha Marie Whiteside, 21, of Keokuk, died Thursday morning, November 25, 2004 at her home. She was born October 26, 1983, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Robert. G. "R.G." and Penny Stephens Whiteside, Jr. She was a lifelong Keokuk resident. She was chosen Little Miss Main Street of Keokuk. She played Girls' Little League softball and was on a state championship team. She was selected to serve as Miss Lee County. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 2002. She had been a cheerleader in high school and was a local leader of High School Students for Better Highways in Northeast Missouri. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Keokuk. She had attended Des Moines Area Community College. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was well known for singing at many local functions including Veterans' activities and the Burlington Bees games. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Penny and David Hotop of Keokuk and her father, R.G. Whiteside of Harvey, Iowa; two brothers, Kory Hotop and Ethan Hotop of Keokuk; stepbrother, Jared Hotop of Ft. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles R. and Helen M. Stephens, paternal grandparents, Robert & Virginia Whiteside, step grandfather, Carl Hotop; step grandmother, Edwina Whiteside; and great aunt, Thelma Hilberer. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Keokuk with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. A memorial has been established in her name.
