Charles Spiker

Charles Joseph Albert Spiker, 89, of Argyle, Iowa died 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Montrose Health Care, in Montrose, Iowa. Mr. Spiker was born on December 7, 1915 in Wapello, Iowa, the son of John William and Ethel Leona Knott Spiker. He married Katherine Marie Johnson on December 29, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. He worked for Burlington Northern railroad in his younger years. For 35 years he was employed at Foote Mineral as a Crane Operator and was known as "Sad Sack". He served in the United States Army in WW II. He was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local. He enjoyed farm work, was good at fixing things, liked fishing and hunting, especially deer and pheasant, and liked to hunt mushrooms. He liked to walk, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his life and kept him alive for many years. oung and her husband, Donald, of Argyle, Iowa and Patricia Spiker of Argyle, Iowa; 11 grandchildren including Eric Young, a grandson serving in Iraq; and 7 great grandchildren. He was the last of his family and was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers, Jim, Francis, Walter, Ross, Alfred, Paul, George, and Edwin; and six sisters, Maude Lewis, Edna Spiker, Connie Spiker, Margaret Rankin, Florence Dray, Verna Frieden; and one brother-in-law, David Frazee. Visitation was after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home with family meeting friends from 6 to 8. Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Thursday, July 7, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Dr. David Castrodale officiating. Full Military Rites by American Legion and V.F.W. will follow. Inurnment will be at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park.
