mself to school. He made many wonderful friends there and thrived under the unconditional support from the teachers and staff, one in particular, Lyn Candor. He had many hobbies and activities that he enjoyed doing: putting together puzzles, mowing the lawn for his family, camping, riding motorcycles, and collecting motorcycle and Harley Davidson memorabilia. Alex also was an 'animal whisperer' - he loved animals and could connect with all and any he came across in life. His favorite animals were his two beloved dogs: Katie and Boji. Alex was a lifetime honorary member of the American Legion Riders and a member of the Independent Riders for Children and Charities where he also held the position of Sergeant of Arms. He was very patriotic and loved his grandfather very much. One of his proudest moments was when he was able to hold the American flag in the honor guard at his grandfather's, John VanMaanen, funeral. Another highlight of Alex's life was in 1992 when he attended a Bruce Springsteen concert. He was able to go backstage and meet his favorite musician, and even got to go on stage with Bruce. Alex will be remembered as a loving, friendly, and family oriented person. He never met a stranger and his family meant the world to him. He was notorious for calling and visiting with family and friends, and even radio hosts, on a regular basis. He loved to visit his brother and sister and was so proud to be an uncle. He cherished the time spent with his family; whether working with his dad on plumbing projects, handing out Christmas presents as the official family Santa, or performing his favorite songs, air guitar included, to his family at home. Alex was an amazing son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and he will be greatly missed.Alex is survived by his parents: Cathy VanMaanen of Le Mars and Tom (Brenda) McVicker of Le Mars; brother, Aaron (Carrie) McVicker of Albert Lea, MN and children: Alexandria and Caydence; sister, Audra McVicker of Minneapolis, MN; aunts and uncles: Vic (Sarah Hatfield) McVicker of Aurora, CO, Mark (Donna) McVicker of Brussels, Belguim, David (Brianne) McVicker of Seattle, WA, Reverend Donna VanMaanen of Yuba, CA, and Karen Paulsen of Le Mars; special aunt, Theresa (Steven 'Rambo') Schilmoeller of Le Mars; cousins: Christy, David, Patty, Alisha, Alexandra, and Wilson; and extended family in Minnesota: Kenny, Kevin, John, and Chad.Alex is preceded in death by his grandparents: Gene and Alice File, and John and Lois VanMaanen; cousin, Elizabeth McVicker; and dog, Katie.Alex's family would like to extend a special Thank-You to the Pride Group staff and Pride residents for the loving care they provided Alex with for many years.
