Florence E. Townsend, 90, of River Hills Village in Keokuk, died 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Keokuk Area Hospital.
Mrs. Townsend was born July 17, 1916 in Davis County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Olen and Mary Work Townsend. After graduating from Troy, Iowa High School on May 16, 1935, she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Davenport, Iowa graduating, September 16, 1939.
Florence served as a reserve nurse in the nurse corps of the United States Navy during World War II. She became a registered professional nurse in Illinois December 6, 1954. In later years, she took secretarial training and began to work as a secretary at the College of Medicine in Chicago, retiring August 20, 1986 soon after her seventieth birthday. All of her adult years were spent in Chicago where she enjoyed the museums and cultural activities.
In July 2006 Florence moved to Keokuk to be near her nephew. She is the last of her family and is survived by her nephew and his wife, Paul and Shirley Townsend.
Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.
There will be no visitation or services.
