ing Elementary Physical Education in the Dade County School System for 36 years, retiring in 2009. It was during his time in the Dade County School System that Bill began a 50 year career of both coaching and officiating athletes from beginners to Olympians in Track and Field. Bill achieved certification as a Master Level Track Official in 1980 which led to him being selected to officiate the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 and 1996 in Atlanta where he was the Lead High Jump Official. He also officiated at the USA Olympic Trials Meets, All Olympic Sports Festival Meets, 2 Goodwill Games Meets with Russia, The NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships numerous times, The Florida Relays, The Penn Relays for 25 years, The Mason Dixon Games, The Bluegrass State Games, The Sunshine State Games, 30 Florida High School State Championship Meets both in Track and Cross Country, The Golden South and The Golden West Meets and numerous SEC, ACC, Big East and Southern Conference Championship Meets among many others. His officiating resume has qualified him to be named to the State of Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1985, The Broward County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and to be, Commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Martha Lane Collins in 1985 for his work in establishing the Bluegrass State Games, appointed to the Governors Counsel on Physical Fitness and Sports by Governor Bob Graham and to be named the first winner of the Horace Crow Award as the outstanding Field Event Official in the USA in 1992 by the USA Track and Field Association. Some of Bill's athletic organization memberships were: United States Track Coaches Association, Florida Athletics Congress, Florida Athletic Coaches Association, National Track Officials Association, The AAU, Broward County Track and Field Officials Association, University of Florida Officials Association, Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame Committee, The Oregon Track Club, The Orlando Track Club and the YMCA. His professional organizational memberships included United Teachers of Dade County Florida, Dade County P.E. Teachers Association, and Florida Education Association among others. All in all- A packed life well lived. Survivors include 4 cousins in Texas and Washington, a multitude of coaches, officials and athletes all over the world whose lives Bill touched, as well as the many local friends who will always cherish his memory.
