Her children remember her for her music, for being the only mother who took them and their friends sledding, and for instilling a love of education by repeatedly telling the story about how she had to quit school after 8th grade graduation. She realized her dream of finishing high school by passing her GED in 1969 and completing secretarial training at Hawkeye Institute of Technology, followed by employment at REC in Allison, Iowa, until her retirement in 1992. She moved to Loveland, Colorado, in 1995 to be near family, and became an active member of First United Presbyterian Church. She spent many hours volunteering in the church kitchen, as well as other places, serving meals for the needy. She continued to sing and play at church services until she moved from her home to assisted living at The Courtyard at the age of 95. She moved from The Courtyard to skilled care living at The Green Houses at Mirasol at the age of 96 and lived there until her passing.
Viola is survived by son Larry (Sharon), daughter Linda, grandson John (Melissa), granddaughter Tanya Wright (Ted), Greatgrandchildren Brooke and Bryce Smeins and Alora and Keegan Wright, sisters Betty Blohm, Mildred Moore and Minnie Miller.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband Egbert, brothers Frances, Lawrence, and Duane, and sisters Evelyn and Virginia.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Allnutt Funeral Service Chapel, Loveland with a reception to follow. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa.
