Magdalena Pequeño Tovar, 88, went to be with her Heavenly Father while surrounded by family at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Magdalena was born on August 28, 1929, in Hualahuises, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to Higinio and Josefa Pequeño. On April 28, 1945, she married Sixto Tovar, Jr. Together, they raised their two children, Diana and Noel, and niece Annie Cerda, who she loved as a daughter. Magdalena was a long-time resident of Weslaco, Texas, where she and her husband raised their family, and she worked as a seamstress for Dickies for over 30 years. She had a deep faith in God and always said that she was blessed beyond measure because of the love she was given and was able to give to others during her life. It was in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that Magdalena found a new, special love. They were the light of her life, and to them she was their sweet Mima. Her great-grandkids will always remember sitting and playing with Mima in her room while she crocheted them a new blanket, or her sneaking them another taste of ice cream. She spent her life praying, loving and serving others as long as she could. Her love, selflessness, beautiful smile and laugh will live on in those who loved her most.
Magdalena was preceded in death by her husband, Sixto Tovar, Jr.; stepmother Dolores Ramírez; siblings, Raul, German, Ramon Pequeño, Maria del Refugio Nevárez, Margarita Ochoa, Alicia Villanueva; sister-in-law, Isabel Tovar, and many nephews, nieces and cousins whom she deeply loved. She is survived by her brother, Manuel Pequeño (wife, Dora Pequeño); daughter, Diana Tovar Hicks (husband, Joseph Hicks) of Bedford, Texas; son Noel Tovar (wife, Cristi Tovar) of Houston, Texas; grandson, Joseph S. Hicks (wife, Stephanie Hicks) of Hurst, Texas; granddaughter Cynthia E. Tovar of Edcouch, Texas; step-granddaughter, Dominique Gorena, of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Joseph Cole, Sydney Rose and Kyle Stephen Hicks of Hurst, Texas. The family would also like to thank Shawn Lee, her home health nurse, for all his care, help and kindness.
