Patricia H. Jones, 81, of Rhinebeck, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck, of complications from Alzheimer's disease, thus bringing an end to an earthly life spent bringing education, joy, love, and the world's finest deviled eggs to those she loved. (Sadly, the recipe was never recorded for posterity.)
Born in Queens, NY on August 22, 1936, she was the daughter of Thomas J. and Augusta (Gillen) Hayes. Pat graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1957, having finished her degree in three years, and met her husband Bob at New Paltz as well; they married at Richmond Hill, NY on November 28, 1957, and were married for 46 years, three of which were spent arguing over the air conditioning, with Bob passing away in 2003. After a year teaching in Red Hook, Pat spent the next 34 years teaching elementary school in Rhinebeck, retiring in 1991 but continuing as a substitute for several years after, because with Pat the desire to both teach and learn never truly went away. She spent her retirement gardening, traveling with Bob, and bragging about her ...[more]
udents - whether they passed through her classroom in 1957 or 1997. In retirement she was also an occasional guest on her son Brian's radio show, where she was an excellent sport while being interrogated about why she insisted on smuggling packets of soup crackers out of Foster's every week, into her purse where they would stay for months on end until the crackers disintegrated, never having seen the inside of a soup bowl.
Pat and Bob were members of Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck, and were members of the Rhinebeck and New York State Retired Teachers Associations.
Pat is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Celeste Jones of Tivoli, a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Jay Jones-Guida of New Paltz, and three budding-genius grandchildren: Lily Jones-Guida, Maria Jones and Daniel Jones. A brother, Thomas A. Hayes of Hempstead, predeceased her, having not quite succceeded in making her a hockey fan, although she did learn the 1940 Rangers roster pretty well.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00PM on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck, NY. Father Douglas Crawford will officiate. Interment will be private.
